Dr. James Woodburn Dies In Madison At Age Of 87 Years
Dr. James Albert Woodburn, 87, professor emeritus at Indiana University, who since his retirement has made his home at 12 Geddes Heights in Ann Arbor, died yesterday at the home of a son, Prof. James G. Woodburn, at Madison, Wis.
Dr. Woodburn was born in Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 30, 1856, and was educated at the University of Indiana and Johns Hopkins. He married Caroline Louise Gelston, a graduate of the University of Michigan, on Nov. 30, 1893. Mrs. Woodburn died in Ann Arbor during the past summer. He is survived by his son, James, and by a daughter, Mrs. Ernst H. Wiecking.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon in Bloomington, Ind.
Dr. Woodburn had been a professor of American history at the University of Indiana from 1890-1924. He was a member of many historical organizations and held honorary degrees from Colgate and Wabash College. In late years he was known for his interest in world peace and in the past he has written extensively on the League of Nations.
