Whatever may be true of this particular case, the slave hoiders will find that ehooting Northern freemen, and burning their dwcllings is not the way to dimini8h the number of Abolitioniste.Our communiiy was startled this evenmg by reporta of a violent rencounter between Kentucky negro hunters and a number of abolitioniste in the Red Oak Setllemenl. The Sheriff with the Georgetown Guards and a large number of our cilizens repaircd to the battie ground,' to quell, if possible the turbulent spirit of the rioters, and to prevent the effusion of human blood. Before the Sheriff and posee arrived on the ground, a work of blood and murder had been consummated. Runaway negroes had been secretfcd in houees of Robert Miller and Absalom Ring in the immediate vicinity of the 'Settlement.' The negroes in queetion were owned byCol. Edward Towere, of Mason county, Ky. Miller's house was eearched, and two of the slaves were discovered, who attempted to mnke their escape, and whilé Miller was in the act of aiding their escape he wss knocked down and stabbed repeatedly by the incensed Kentuckians. He hngered but a few moments and died. The two slaves were then bound, when they proceeded to the house of Klng, where they were met by four or five armed men who declared their determination toresistany searchofthe house. Bot h par- ties being well armed, a most horrible conflict ensued. A son of Col. Towers was killed immodiately. King, while, re-loading some of the fire-arms in the houee, was shot by ome one through the window in the back part of the house. He is stil 1 living, though Dr. Cappetï, who has since eeen him, thinks it is ttnpo88ible for him to recover. At this stage of their proceedings, Sheriff ■Shields and po6se arrived, and by bis fearlessnes8 and efficiency, put a stop to any further outrages. The ring leaders of each party were arrested and escorted to Georgetown under a strong guard. Their trial will commenee to-rnorrow at 12 o'clock, before Justice Goodwin, We hope the parties to this infamous proceeding will be made to feel the evere penalty of the law they have so grossly violated.
