For the sixth time in seven years Washtenaw county couples have emptied Dan Cupid's quiver of more than 1,000 arrows.
The county clerk's office accepted marriage license application No. 1,000 yesterday afternoon from an Ypsilanti twosome, Charles Dale Slinkard, 22, and Mary Elizabeth Haverkamp, 21.
But the county's marriage business has slowed down considerably from last year's near record volume. The 1,000 mark was reached last year on Sept. 22, and the total for 1947 hit 1,316.
Indications are the 1948 total won't go much above 1,150. The all-time record was established two years ago, in 1946, when 1,347 couples sought official permission to trudge to the altar.
The first war year, 1942, saw the clerk's office accept more than 1,000 applications for the first time in history. The figure that year was 1,183. Previously, the total had run generally 800 and 900 for several years.
The 1,000 mark has been topped every year since with the exception of 1945 when the romance mill slowed and only 969 couples applied.

1,000TH COUPLE GET LICENSE: Couple No. 1,000 to apply for a marriage license at the Washtenaw county clerk's office during the year are Ypsilanti accountant Charles Dale Slinkard, 22, of 412 Ferris St., and his bride-to-be Mary Elizabeth Haverkamp, 21-year-old secretary living at 417 Washtenaw Ave., Ypsilanti. Mr. Slinkard and Miss Haverkamp, who took the big step yesterday afternoon, are shown receiving their license from Barbara M. Dowse, deputy county clerk.
