Presbyterians Approve Church Addition Plan

Some 150 local Presbyterians overwhelmingly reapproved a $392,000 building program at a meeting of the Church Society Wednesday night.

No more than half a dozen of those present failed to confirm the revised budget figures for the new church school wing. Building Committee Chairman Samuel D. Porter presented the program.

The Church Society originally voted on the construction in November, 1933. A five-member building committee was authorized at that time to draw up plans for the project. In 1954, the church raised over $200,000 in cash and pledges, payable in the next three years, for the addition.

Dr. John W. Henderson, secretary-treasurer of the U-M Presbyterian Corp. which is responsible for the Presbyterian student program, explained the need for more space for student activity at Wednesday's meeting. The new wing, which will extend in a westerly direction from the present south wing, will make it possible to release the first and second floors of the existing wing for University student use.

Receives Funds

The church received substantial funds for financing the present structure through an agreement with the corporation that more adequate student facilities would be provided when feasible. The present plans will fulfill the church obligation.

The church offices and parlor located at present in the south wing, will be moved to the first floor of the new west wing. Nursery and kindergarten church school classes will be held on the ground floor of the new wing, while primary and junior classrooms will be on the second floor. The basement will be left unfinished for the time being. The third floor of the existing south wing will also be used for the church school.

The architectural firm of Colvin, Robinson & Associates has announced that final plans can be completed in time for bids in July. Work on this addition will begin this summer with completion set for sometime in 1956.

The Rev. Henry Kuizenga will preach at 9 and 11 a.m. services tomorrow on “The Follower and His Cross.” The second service will be broadcast over station WPAG each Sunday throughout May.

Committee Named

Mr. and Mrs. George Amendt, Mr. and Mrs. George McConkey, Mr. and Mrs. Willington Burt, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stuart and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Merchant will serve on the coffee hour committee this week.

The Senior High Westminister Fellowship will join with the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Senior High group at 5:30 p.m. for a hot dog roast at the council ring behind the church. Afterwards the two groups will see a movie called “Decision in Thailand,” illustrating what it means to become a Christian in a non-Christian country.

The Westminister Student Fellowship will meet at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow for a discussion on “What is Christian Love?” The Geneva Fellowship will meet at 5:45 p.m. for supper, after which the Rev. William Baker will speak on the “Life in Christ.”

Dr. Hsi-Yen Liu, a pediatrician at University Hospital, will speak on the "First Five Years of the Child” to the Young Couples Club meeting.

At the weekly Men’s Association luncheon at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Lauren R. Hunter will speak on a trip he and his wife took recently to the Mediterranean area and Palestine. The talk will be called. “Journey to the Walls of Jericho.”
