‘U’ President Leaves For Services In Iowa

Dr. Alexander G. Ruthven, president of the University, left j early this afternoon for Ruthven, la., to attend funeral services for his father, John Ruthven, who died yesterday of a heart attack at the age of 94 in the little community which he had founded and which was named for him.

A native of Scotland who came to this country when he was 35 years old, John Ruthven participated in the building of the west as a railroad contractor for many years. Later he superintended land holdings which he had acquired and recently he had retired from active work.

Mr. Ruthven settled in Chicago upon coming to this country and became a contractor for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. In this capacity he was active in the construction of the line north to Milwaukee and westward to South Dakota.

President Ruthven had visited his father last fall and described him as being in good health at that time. Dr. Ruthven’s mother, the former Katherine Rombough, died in 1929.
