The N. O Picayune of the 22d, no ticing the varióos contrrdictions of Gen Taylor's giving the Mexicana " h - ] d - n'em" which have been volunteorec by the press, sticks to its story, with protty rich article, the following extract from vvhich we commend to the "pravo: ful nttention " of the Boston Journal. " There is not a man in the army wh has been nenr Gen. Taylor in moment of grcat peril who does not recogniz something characteristic in the terms em ployed. In peace tliere is no man mor dignified in his deportment, more franl in his innnners, or more candid in hi speech than is Gen. Taylor. His hear is as gontle as courage can mak 6 it, anc his language as direct as honesty. Bu no man ever yet, was capable of grea deeds who was not subject to the excite ment of a crisis. With genius it be comes inspiration, and under its influence the shortest word is the best and n 'damn is bricfer tiian wit. It is a pallry afFec tation in any one who knows the genera to pretend to be shocked at vrhet was re lated of him at Buena "Visla. It is a mere sham for the benefit of pnritnnica souls who do their damningafter a more canonical formulary than is gcncrally used on hattle-fields. The anecdote narralcd in (his paper was published because it was true ; because it was characteristic ; because it hfilped to show how fearful were the crifcü which continually occurred during the Lattle. The worós camo out of Gen. Tnylor's mouth and were no doubt as acceptable to Ileaven as the roaring of the cannon which belched forth death nnd strewed the earth wjth slaughicr." - Emancipator. ttj Some of the papers are trying to prove that ashcs that are three or four nonlhs oíd wil] take fire by voluntary combustión, throug the applicalion of mosture. It may be so: but we thinl: it (ither a hnrd story to believe.
