My name is Isabel Angelica Delgado, I’m 20 years old, I had just finished signing up for my first scientific internship. I got accepted to Caltech a year ago and it was always my dream to become a scientist.
I grew up in a broken home. I lived in Havana, Cuba my father died when I was 7 years old. After that my mother became an alcoholic and I had to step up. I was the oldest of 3 kids and I had to help my Abuela out a lot because my sister were troublemakers. When I turned 10 I competed in my very first science fair, for some reason I was very motivated to win and so every day after school I would do my homework and work on my project. I had won and It was the greatest feeling ever. After that, I worked hard in every one of my classes and I competed in more and more science fairs. It was hard because I lived in a place with not that many resources. When I turned 18 my Abuela moved us to America so I and my sister's futures could be brighter.
Despite the odds against me and my family, I knew someday my dream would be complete. I would have my own office and a white coat.
Every day I would beg my grandmother to let me enroll in Caltech in California, even though I knew the answer would be no. We didn’t have a lot of money and it was hard thinking my dream could be over. But turns out money wasn’t something in the way. My mother had been working so hard and went to rehab but the money she has been making is more than enough for admission for Caltech University.
I barely knew anything my first day I got lost a couple times and slept in some days because my sisters weren’t there to wake me up. By the end of the first year, I got the hang of living on my own and showed excellence to the teachers. By last year my teachers sent a recommendation letter to Caltech Powell-Booth Laboratory for Computational Science where they decided if I was good enough for their internship. I was ready for the rest of my life. Even though I struggled with work and school. I finally made it I’m the official intern for Caltech Powell-Booth Laboratory. Which is where I always dreamed I would be and maybe someday I will be an employee.
