The water of the lake glistens before you. Your dog barks in delight, bounding through the water, scaring every fish away with his happy paws. It’s the most lively he’s looked in weeks.

Sometimes, you regret it. That you’ve poured so much love into an animal just to watch it waste away.

But then you think of all the love and loyalty this animal has returned through his wet kisses and tackle hugs. You think of all the memories he’s brought you, moments of muddy paws and puppy dog eyes full of mischief.

But those memories are now tainted because he’s dying, and you can’t even bring yourself to tell your kids because they love this dog more than anything.

And because you love this dog more than anything, and you don’t want him to go, but the pain he must be in-- it’s crushing.

The water glistens, just like the tears on your cheek.
