When: September 8, 2020

Pallavi Singh discusses her work and the affect of Covid-19 from her studio in New Delhi, India.

Artist Statement:

I explore the constructs of sexuality, gender stereotypes, and the perception of beauty. Using men as a focal point, my work analyzes shifts in preconceived notions that society has been conditioned to believe grooming and beauty are inherently feminine.

Urban Indian men are slowly demolishing traditional concepts of rugged masculinity in favour of metrosexuality; journalist and writer Mark Simpson, popular culture at large, and the pervasive men's grooming industry are touchstones that have influenced a mindset shift— bringing the perception of beauty and sexuality for men into the mainstream. Aware of the transient nature of sexuality, gender, and beauty, my work reaches into mythology for further points of reference. Depicting raw and bold narratives formulated around every-day male characters, insecurities about the acceptance of their metrosexual needs are highlighted. This is juxtaposed with hyperbolic images of commercial media which allure the common man.
