Michelle Inez Hinojosa’s “Seeking Belonging in the Light Cast by Nine Birds” is a collection of transparent artworks which unfold memories about migration, indigenous / intergenerational knowledge, and love. These artworks reference traditional quilting patterns of the United States and textile and embroidery designs used in traditional Mexican clothing. Michelle Inez Hinojosa makes connections between the movement of migratory birds, her own family, and the many other families who find themselves crossing borders. In this exhibit, the nine birds are flying North, the same as her family’s movement seeking a future without borders, while they appear to fly into the library doors, seeking both knowledge and space to belong.
