Happy Birthday Arthur Miller!

Arthur Asher Miller (October 17, 1915 – February 10, 2005) was an American playwright. A prominent figure in American literature and cinema for over 61 years, he wrote a wide variety of plays, including celebrated works such as The Crucible, A View from the Bridge, All My Sons, and Death of a Salesman, which are still studied and performed worldwide. Miller was often in the public eye, most famously for refusing to give evidence against others to the House Un-American Activities Committee, being the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (among countless other awards), and for his marriage to Marilyn Monroe. Arthur Miller is also one of the University of Michigan's most distinguished alumni and the only theater in the world to bear his name exists here in Ann Arbor, on the U of M campus.

A Book in 6 to 12 Minutes

The University of Michigan features an Espresso Book Machine in the lobby of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library. The Espresso Book Machine is made by OnDemandBooks and will be used to print out-of-copyright books and materials from the internet archive. The service is available to faculty, students and the public.

Free rent! You see this on signs outside apartment complexes, all the time. Tomorrow evening, come to the Downtown Library's Multi-Purpose Room for free Rent of a different kind.
As part of its 25th Anniversary season, the University of Michigan Department of Musical Theatre is thrilled to be one of the first regional companies to produce the theatrical phenomenon musical Rent by Jonathan Larson.
Join us at the Downtown Library Multi-Purpose Room on Wednesday, September 24 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm as Mark Madama, Associate Professor of Musical Theatre at the University of Michigan (and the director of the upcoming UM production) discusses Rent and the reasons why it has become such an important part of musical theater history. He will also describe the upcoming UM production and, as a special treat, cast members will perform selections from the musical (which begins its run on October 16)

Finding Reliable Health Information

To some the internet is a big, scary world all unto itself. Who are those people out there? Are the facts presented on the Internet correct? What should I believe and not believe? In one area help is here.
Librarians from the University of Michigan Taubman Health Sciences, the former Taubman Medical Library, will present user-friendly methods of finding quality online information about diseases, drugs, and therapies.
They have set aside two times to present this information on October 1. The first time will be at 1:00 pm at the Traverwood Branch Library. Later in the evening on October 1, the Michigan Health Sciences librarians will be at the Downtown Library at 7:00 pm in the Training Center on the third floor.
If health issues regarding diseases, drugs, or therapies are of a concern to you, don’t miss either one of these sessions.
Register online through the Ann Arbor District Library, come to any branch of the library, or call 734.327.4560 during library hours and don’t miss knowing the reliable facts regarding health issues.

UM has a new video service called CARMA - Campus Automated Rich Media Archiving. CARMA captures lectures, events, presentations, and workshops and posts them online for public or private use. The CARMA website features some fun sample lectures. CARMA started in response to the ATLAS project need to share information across continents and later on sparked MScribe which captures video with a robotic camera.

Prolific poverty expert chosen by U-M

A leading expert on poverty and women's issues will become dean of the U-M School of Social Work, if U-M regents approve. Laura Lein, of the University of Texas, was chosen as the new dean, according to a U-M press release. Read more in The Ann Arbor News.

Ashes to Hope Wins National Award

Michigan Radio WUOM-FM just won an Edward R. Murrow award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association, for the 2007 documentary Ashes to Hope: Overcoming the Detroit Riots. Congratulations to Michigan Radio for its first ever Murrow award!

Online collections from the Art, Architecture & Engineering Library

Whether you're looking for a local map from 1923 or the plan for the Piazza Del Campidoglio, searching for detail from a great work of art or architecture, consider browsing AAEL's Lantern Slide Collection, which includes thousands of digital images created from lantern slides showing architecture, cities, and landscapes from the late 19th and 20th centuries.
The AAEL also boasts a growing collection of Artists' Books in the form of art objects or art objects in the form of books. (The books require careful handling, so many are housed in the Special Collections Room and available by appointment.)

Ice ice baby...

Main Street will feature an “Ice Carving Extravaganza” where members of the U of M ice carving team will be on Main Street carving and chipping large ice blocks into beautiful ice sculptures. The question is, with Michigan’s wacky weather of late, how long will they last? For a quick know-how and visual sneak peek try a book on Practical Ice Carving.
Check out the art in progress on Friday, February 8 from 6-10pm and from 10am-6pm on Saturday, February 9 and Sunday, February 10.

1922 Detroit newspaper rotogravure portrait and bio of U-M President Marion LeRoy Burton

President Burton died of complications of angina, on February 18, 1925, several months after he suffered a heart attack in the fall of 1924. He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery. Burton was a star of the 1924 national Republican Convention, where he nominated President Calvin Coolidge for a full term in his own right. Coolidge, who had succeeded to the presidency on the death of Warren G. Harding, was indeed elected in 1924.
