Three more days will be required to clear away the wreckage of the University power plant crane which crashed into the viaduct of the University railroad spur during Wednesday's storm, E. C. Pardon, superintendent of building and grounds, estimated today. Workmen for Diehl Wreckers are shown using torches to cut the crane into pieces to be hauled away. Thirty tons of steel will be removed, while the crusher, hopper, carriage, gears and other parts will be salvaged for use with the new, latest type and longer crane ordered for delivery in six to eight weeks. Insurance covers only the damage to the street, but it was estimated that the premiums on insurance for the 27-year-old crane would have amounted to more than the cost of replacement, Mr. Pardon said.

Now completely installed, this new crane replaces the 70-ton traveling crane which plunged off the end of its rails during a heavy wind and rain storm July 24. The replacement and installation cost approximately $24,000. Salvage from the severely twisted and damaged crane,, which crashed onto the viaduct of the University railway spur 62 feet below, amounted to about $6,000.
