Elm Tree in front of YWCA, S. Fourth Ave, June 1952

Year:
1952
Published In:
Ann Arbor News, June 17, 1952
Caption:
Another curb will be bent around the base of a tree when workmen widening S. Fourth Ave. reach the elm (left) in front of the YWCA. Sidestepping construction something like the example at right (on Eighth St. between W. Liberty and W. Washington Sts.) will be necessary -- thanks to the City Council's spare-that-tree action last night. The Public Works Department had ruled that the tree in front of the YWCA must go to preserve a straight cub line. But the Council, which has intervened previously in behalf of ill-placed trees, ruled that the elm shall live and the curb shall bend.
