Washtenaw county offers few more beautiful scenes than the still waters of the Huron River, just below the Hudson Mills dam near N. Territorial Rd., a few hundred feet east of Dexter-Pinckney Rd. The original Hudson Mills were built in 1827 for sawing the lumber that went into the construction of pioneer Dexter township homes. Fire apparently destroyed the original mills, for history records a second building of Hudson Mills in 1846 for the manufacture of paper. Thomas Birkett, who acquired the Dover Mills in the mid-century, also gained control of the Hudson Mills about that time and operated the paper mill there.

WADING IS FUN, TOO: Walking among the slippery rocks in the rapids above the swimming pool at Hudson Mills is great sport, and the dog likes it too. This spot is one of the many recreational points along the Huron river. The bridge in the background is on North Territorial Rd., near Portage Lake Rd.
