Eve Schmale saw no reason why an accident that blinded her 10 years ago should mean turning away from years of volunteer service. When one agency couldn't find enough for her to do, she got in touch with Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and ended up as coordinator of volunteers at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. She marvels at the "inspired" WISD program, which, she says, enables mentally retarded people to "live like human beings instead of in institutions."
