THE VERY FIRST ASSIGNMENT: Kindergartners were asked to sit at their little knee-high-to-an-adult tables and draw whatever they wanted to on sheets of manila paper. Many of the drawings came out as houses, misshapen dogs and cats, and others just came out. Here, Susan Klebsattel, left, and Connie Clague work on the problem at hand.

Her audience, who recited the rhyme in unison later, took turns saying familiar poems. One of the first things they learned was to raise their hands when they wanted to answer.
