Willie Stohrer, 13-year-old boy living at 1432 Barnard Heights, placed ninth in Class B in last year's Ann Arbor Soap Box Derby. He determined to do better this year. So when he got around to build his car for this year's race he consulted Bob Hahn, last year's city champion, for advice. Willie is shown above working on his steering apparatus while Champion Hahn, wearing the helmet that he used in last year's All-American race at Akron, watches. Champion Bob is willing to give other boys advice on how to construct a winning car. He thinks that Willie Stohrer has built a real capable racer. The local race will be held Saturday July 27.

Boys entered in the fifth annual Ann Arbor Soap Box Derby to be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon on Broadway Hill, reported at Derby headquarters this morning for the official inspection and weighing-in of their cars. Seated in his well-built little racer above is Jack Schilling, 1641 Fulmer St., who, as a 12-year-old boy, will compete in Class B. George Crandall, --, shown at the left, was Class B. champion last year and runner-up for the city title. Crandall, who lives at 220 Ann St., is shown with his car in which he will seek to repeat in Class B. tomorrow. At the right is Edward Gillespie, --, 229 Crest Ave., who also is a Class B. competitor.

SALINE BOY GETS REVENGE: In last year's local Soap Box Derby, Warren Martin of Saline reached the finals of Class B where he was beaten by George Crandall. The two boys met again Saturday and in the above picture, Martin on the left, is shown nosing out Crandall in the semi-finals of Class B. Martin went to the finals again, losing this year to Edward Gillespie. The race shown above was one of the closest of the 30 heat program.

SOAP BOX RACE IS INTERESTING: The boys who pilot cars in the Soap Box Derby race don't get all of the thrills. Judging from the expression on the faces of the above spectators, they also get a "kick" out of the race. An estimated crowd of about 5,000 saw the annual race held Saturday on Broadway Hill.

NO CRACKUPS: HAD QUIET DAY: There were no crack-ups in Saturday's Ann Arbor Soap Box Derby, so Miss Mildred Anderson, Red Cross nurse shown above with her first aid station, had little to do. Her only patient was a little boy who got something in his eye. However, the Red Cross was on the job, in case there had been any serious accidents. Miss Anderson was assisted by Dr. Robert Rehner of the University Hospital.

FINAL SOAP BOX DERBY RACE WAS CLOSE: Alfred White, 906 Packard St., is shown above winning the Ann Arbor Soap Box Derby title by defeating Edward Gillespie, the Class B champion, in the city championship race. White had previously won the Class A title. Gillespie, who swept through Class B without a defeat, gave White a real argument as the above picture shows. The two cars were neck and neck most of the way down the hill.

Alfred White, 15-year-old boy living at 906 Packard, was the happiest boy in Ann Arbor Saturday night. For Alfred was crowned champion of the Ann Arbor Soap Box Derby and will represent Ann Arbor in the All-American finals at Akron, O., on Aug. 11. Alfred not only got a big thrill out of winning the race and the title, but he also got a big kick out of receiving the M. E. Coyle trophy which was presented to him by Coach Fritz Crisler as shown in the above picture. He was so excited that he found it difficult to mumble thanks as the Wolverine coach made the presentation.
