BLOOD IS REFRIGERATED: While prospective donors are examined before giving blood, sterile pint containers which have been filled with blood are placed in a special refrigerated box. Temperature of liquid blood must be kept constant and every care is taken in the program to see that the blood reaches the laboratory in proper condition. In the picture above, a nurse is putting one of the pint bottles tagged with the donor's name and address into the refrigerator. At the end of the day's work, these containers are rushed by express to a laboratory in Indianapolis, Ind., for processing.
