Just A Few Of Them Just a portion of the 925 musical instruments used in the fifth grade music classes of Ann Arbor public schools can be shown in this picture. Where to store just the stringed instruments is a problem for Benton Young, custodian foreman at Angell School, where all the instruments are kept during the summer. Although half of all the instruments are now out for repairs, every instrument is checked and given a "condition" tag by music experts before it is put in storage.

A modern "minstrel" plays an old instrument. Prof. William H. Stubbins of the U-M Music School is shown playing a recorder, or "fipple flute." The recorder is an 800-year-old musical instrument that is still widely played. Three sizes of the ancient instrument are shown here: a small "sopranino" protrudes from Stubbins' pocket and a large, bass recorder lies on the music rack. The University Extension Service is offering a night course in the recorder next semester.
