"Playful- All of Art's "graduates" live at home with their handlers, many of whom have small children, so it is essential that the dogs be basically friendly animals. The handlers consider them pets as well as professional colleagues. The playful side of the dogs is demonstrated below left by Charles Art as he frolics with Duke, and by Skavdahl, below right, with Blackie, who is taking time off from a busy training session to relax and roll on the grass in Art's back yard. Because of the selection and training process the handlers have absolutely no qualms about allowing the dogs free rein of the house, even when there are small children present, as there are in many of the homes."

"Turnabout- Larry Skavdahl one of Charles Art's trainers, demonstrates a basic principle Art adheres to in dog training - an animal MUST attack on command, but he also MUST immediately break off that attack on command. Above Heidi, under commander of Hesse Bartlett, and below Duchess, restrained by Art Fletcher, go after Skavdahl, who simulates an attacker. Fangs barred, and straining at the leash, the dogs will either protect their master from attack or rout an intruder. But at the command "Friend" the dog will stop the attack at once, and even, as demonstrated above right by Holly, under command of Cappy Cappanella, allow himself to be petted, as Skavdahl is doing. Careful selection (only one dog in 40 is accepted for training), and thorough training, together with the dog's basic even temperament, is the key to this turnabout in action."
