Michigan State College (MSC) - Campus Scene. Michigan State College (MSC), was the nation’s pioneer land-grant university and the prototype for the entire land-grant system created when President Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862. The school's name was changed to Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science (MSC) in 1925. In 1964 the college was formally renamed Michigan State University.
