The joy comes from the love, bonding, and connections that are shared within a family. The pain results when family members are unable to accept each other's strengths, weaknesses, desires, abilities, fears, and feelings. Many of us struggle throughout our lives to gain acceptance from our parents or children, siblings and grandparents. Tina Howe's Painting Churches is a play about one family's struggle to understand each other. As audience members, we witness the Church family's joy and pain, then finally, their acceptance and hope. Painting Churches premiered off-Broadway in 1983. The play brought Tina Howe the Rosamond Gilder Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in the Theater, an Obie for distinguished writing, and the Outer Critic's Circle John Gassner Award for Outstanding New American Playwright.
