Nathaniel J. DeBarr, 92, Civil war veteran serving under General Custer, died at 6:30 Thursday evening after a lingering illness. With Mrs. DeBarr he had made his home at 802 East Huron St. since moving to Ann Arbor 10 years ago.
Born Oct. 28, 1838, in New York state, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo DeBarr of Sterling township, N. Y., Mr. Debarr for many years had resided in Michigan. He enlisted in the Civil war at Bath, Mich., and served with Co. G. fifth Michigan Cavalry under Gen. Custer from 1862 to 1865.
He was married July 14, 1858, at White Oak, to Miss Eliza Jane Killecut, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Killecut, natives of Cayuga county, N. Y. They resided for a number of years at Eaton Rapids, moving to Ann Arbor in 1920.
Mr. DeBarr was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church here, the Odd Fellows of Boyne City, and the G. A. R. post of Ann Arbor.
He is survived by the widow; a son, Ernest G. DeBarr of Ann Arbor and two granddaughters, Mrs. Metta Cox of Jackson and Miss Marjorie DeBarr of Los Angeles, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the Dolph funeral home. Interment will be at Bath.
