Albert Stevens Taken By Death
Illness Is Fatal to Former Proprietor of Hotel at Whitmore Lake
Albert Stevens, 79, formerly proprietor of the Lake House hotel at Whitmore Lake for many years, died at 1:30 Friday afternoon at his home at Whitmore Lake, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Stevens was born Sept. 20, 1851, at Whitmore Lake, and was the son of the late Albert Stevens, sr., who erected the Lake House about 95 years ago. The elder Mr. Stevens was proprietor of the hotel until his death in 1867.
The hostelry was a favorite stopping place of lumbermen, farmers and hunters many years ago. University of Michigan students also frequented the hotel, and often gave balls and dinner and dancing parties there. It is said that attendance at some of the larger balls reached a total of 250 couples. Famous orchestras supplied the music for the dances, giving the Stevens' inn a reputation that was maintained throughout the years.
Albert Stevens, jr., after spending some time in the grocery business at Edmore went to North Dakota. In 1884, he returned to Whitmore Lake and purchased the Lake House which he managed until a few years ago when his son, Roe B. Stevens, assumed the proprietorship. Mrs. Stevens died in 1905.
He is survived by five children, Mrs. James E. Lawrence of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. E. J. Gibb of Highland Park, Frederick D. Stevens of Belle Glade, Fla., Harrison A. Stevens of Dallas, Tex., and Roe B. Stevens of Whitmore Lake; nine grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Whitmore Lake Methodist church. Rev. A. P. Rickard will officiate, and interment will be in the Whitmore Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the Dolph funeral home until Monday morning.
