Mrs. Carven, 90, Passes In Saline

SALINE – Mrs. Julia Elizabeth Carven, one of this city’s oldest residents, died yesterday afternoon at the age of 90 in Saline General hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Carven was born in Steuben County, N. Y., March 12, 1852, and was living at Fairfax, Va., when the Civil war broke out, forcing her family to flee from a homestead which was successively in the possession of Northern and Southern forces.

Her parents were Gardner and Katherine J. E. Sagar Slayton. Her father fought in the Northern army.

She came to Saline in 1869, traveling part way by stagecoach, to make her home with a great-aunt, Mrs. Jane Wheeler Drake. She became a dressmaker, and in Jan. 1882, married Charles Howe Carven. He died Feb. 5, 1934.

Since her husband’s death, Mrs. Carven lived here with her only child, Mrs. Bessie E. Collins. She also leaves two grandsons, Charles and Max Collins, also of Saline. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the residence, 109 W. Henry St., with Rev. William Bach officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Friends may call at the residence after noon tomorrow.
