Track Test With Ohio Will Be Tip-Off On Big Ten Meet

Dual Battle Carded Here Friday Night

440 And Half-Mile Will Be Feature Events On Program

Ohio State and Michigan meet here at 7:30 Friday night in their fourth engagement in seven days, this one a track meet for which flipping a coin and taking your pick is as good a way as any to predict the winner.

The Buckeyes are defending Big Ten champions and the advance dope has it that the title battle this season will be another Ohio-Michigan affair, thus adding importance to the impending dual clash between the two teams.

Ohio has beaten Michigan only twice in 28 track meets, indoors and out, since 1907 but one of those defeats was an 81 2/3 to 40 1/3 pasting handed the Wolverines at Columbus last spring and to put it mildly Coach Kenneth Doherty and his veterans would like to get even this week for that troublesome day.

Should Be Close

The Buck's other victory was scored in 1936 but only once in this long cinder series has a meet been as close as it is predicted the impending contest will be. That was in 1921 when Michigan won, 69-66. It is not unlikely that a mere three points will separate the 1943 teams also.

It has been an "Ohio week" for Wolverine squads. Michigan’s swimming team opened it last Saturday with a 43 1/2 to 41 1/2 triumph at Columbus, the second aquatic victory of the season over Ohio, and in a basketball thriller that night the Buckeye quintet edged Michigan 46-44 after the lead had changed hands 23 times. Monday the Ohio cagers repeated, 53-38, and it will take a Wolverine track victory to even the week's count.

Two Champs Meet

Highlight of the meet will be the 440 duel between Bob Ufer of Michigan and Russ Owen of the Bucks. Ufer is Big Ten indoor champion and! Owen is outdoor titlist. A new Yost field house record is likely to be the result.

The - half-mile will be another great race between Capt. Dave Matthews of the Wolverines and John Jones of Ohio and all other events as well are expected to be closely fought. With the conference meet to be held a week later, both squads are nearing top shape and an assault on the record books may result.
