Alice Porter, Retired School Teacher, Dies
Taught In Ann Arbor High 38 Years; Medal Named in Her Honor
Miss Alice Porter, 95, who taught Latin at the Ann Arbor High School for 38 years, died late yesterday at the Evans-Marshall Rest Home after a two weeks' illness.
Miss Porter was the woman for whom the Alice Porter Medal, given annually to the outstanding senior girl at Ann Arbor High School, was named. The award was established in her honor in 1927 after she had retired.
A member of a pioneer Ann Arbor family, she was born here on Nov. 24, 1853, a daughter of Dr. Charles B. Porter and Abigail Sawyer Porter. Her father was a dentist in Ann Arbor for many years.
University Graduate
She was graduated from the University's Literary School in 1883 and began teaching Latin at Ann Arbor High School. After her retirement, she continued to tutor pupils in the language.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school there at one time. She lived at 508 E. Ann St.
Surviving are a niece, Mrs. W. R. Duddington of Niles and a nephew, Charles T. Porter of Bay City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Muehlig Chapel with Rev. William P. Lemon officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
