Voters Approve Move To Join City System
Residents of the Fritz School District yesterday took the first step toward becoming part of the Ann Arbor Public School system when it voted in favor of the annexation.
The vote was 115 in favor, 73 against.
Helge E. Hansen, executive secretary of the district’s board of education, said today the proposal requires approval by The Ann Arbor and Scio township boards and the Ann Arbor Board of Education before it is effective.
Hansen said the Fritz board hopes to receive the necessary approval by July 1, official end of the current term.
Over-Crowding Feared
The proposal, said its proponents, was prompted by the crowded conditions expected to develop when the new kindergarten class is entered next fall.
Approval by both the Ann Arbor and Scio township boards is necessary, Hansen explained, because the Fritz district falls in parts of both areas. Three-fifths of the present valuation is in Scio township and two-fifths in Ann Arbor.
At present, the Fritz school district has 208 pupils, approximately 100 of whom attend Ann Arbor High School and Slauson Junior High School. The remainder are enrolled in the kindergarten through the sixth grade in the district’s five-room school.
Hansen said the district’s board may move to limit classes to kindergarten through the third or fourth grades, should the annexation proposal be passed by the township boards and the Ann Arbor Board of Education.
