Howard O. Smith
Retired Printer Worked At News For 20 Years
Howard O. Smith, 69, a former employe in The Ann Arbor News composing room for 20 years, died Saturday afternoon at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital after a 10 days' illness. His home was at 119 N. Main St.
He was born June 18, 1880, at Milam, Tex., a son of Joseph and Julia Walker Smith, and for many years was a resident of Detroit, where he worked as a printer.
Mr. Smith came to Ann Arbor in 1927 and entered the employ of The News on July 2, 1928, first as a linotype operator and later as a proofreader. He retired May 1, 1948.
He was a past president of the Ann Arbor Typographical Union and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Mr. Smith was a Democratic candidate for alderman from Ann Arbor's Third Ward in the 1948 spring elections.
On April 11, 1927, he was married to Audrey Dohmer of Detroit, who is the only survivor.
Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Burial will be made in St. Thomas Cemetery. Friends may call at the Muehlig Chapel, where the Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock this evening.
