Sanitary Fill Site Scored By Scio Group

Former Head of Killins Firm, Which Offered Land, Joins Protest

A petition signed by 103 Scio township residents protesting location of the city’s sanitary fill at the old Killins gravel pit site at 3305 W. Liberty Rd. was presented to the City Council last night.

One of the signers of protest petition was Glenn E. Killins of 4001 W. Liberty Rd., fomer president of the Killins Gravel Co., whose present officers have offered the pit to the city as a fill site for $35,000.

The petition said that operation of the fill for garbage disposal at that location would be a violation of township zoning laws prohibiting garbage dumps.

Say Special Vote Needed

The petitioners claim that a special township vote would have to be held to allow the fill to go in at the site and that residents would vote against the plan.

"Operation by even the most modern methods would cause foul and offensive odors, noise and dust, and would reduce property values,” it added.

The signers asked the Council to reject any proposal for locating the fill there.

Circulators of the petition were Lawrence Stein of 4300 W. Liberty Rd. and Raymond Eschelbach of 1315 S. Wagner Rd.

The Killins pit is one of several sites that have been under consideration for the fill. It is a tract of 24 acres located two and a half miles west of the city.

Feel Price Too High

City officials have indicated that they feel the $35,000 price would make the land too costly for use as a fill.

A sanitary fill is a place where garbage and rubbish are dumped to decompose and the dirt is filled in on top. The land may later be used for other purposes.

A special Council committee has been working on the fill project since last September.

At present garbage is collected in the city without charge and fed to hogs on outlying farms. The practice has been denounced as unsanitary by county health officials.
