Ypsilanti -- Then And Now:
Covered Sidewalks Long Gone
A far cry from the days of the covered sidewalk, this block of W. Michigan Ave. in Ypsilanti (bottom) now resembles the main street of any typical American community. The wooden sidewalk covering "disappeared” mysteriously and prematurely one night shortly after the turn of the century, allegedly torn down by a group of spirited local youths. The "then” picture (top) was taken sometime before 1893. The top floor of the corner building which now houses a drugstore (center background, both views) was razed about 40 years ago following a fire.
