Printing Firm Founder Dies
Samuel Lowery, 81, of 1417 Broadway, founder and proprietor for 20 years of the former Lowery Printing and Specialty Co. here, died yesterday afternoon at his home after a short illness.
Mr. Lowery was born Sept. 18, 1876, in Grafton, Ont., a son of James and Liza Jane Boyd Lowery. He came to the United States in 1884 and spent his youth at Clare and Owosso.
He and Blanche Cruickshank were married in 1903, in Detroit. The couple came to Ann Arbor in 1922, and celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary here in 1953. Mr. Lowery established his printing business here in 1926.
The business which was known as the Lowery Printing and Specialty Co., was devoted to general commercial printing and specialized in the production of periodical publications. Mr. Lowery was later joined in the business by his son Edward J. Lowery.
In 1947, he sold his printing business to J. Warren Kays, former proprietor of the Gladwin County Press, and took a job in the composing room of The Ann Arbor News. He worked for The News until his retirement in 1952.
Mr. Lowery was a life member of the Golden Rule Masonic Lodge No. 159. He also was a member of Zal Gaz Grotto No. 34, and a member of Ann Arbor Typographical Union.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche; his son Edward of Ann Arbor; two daughters, Mrs. Winifred Roberts of Ann Arbor and Mrs. Emil W. Keck of Detroit; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Staffan-Hildinger Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Laurent of the First Presbyterian Church officiating.
