Items Damaged At Band Shell
Saturday July 16, 1966
Two 12-year-old boys and a 15-year-old companion have admitted to police they used a tree limb to batter electrical equipment in the band shell at West Park.
Officers apprehended the boys in the shell after a complaint had been received from a person living nearby. Police said a meter box on the west side of the shell had been ripped away and extensively damaged, while the base for an electric light was broken. A light bulb in the shell was also smashed, patrolmen said, and a rubbish barrel was overturned.
The youths were released to their parents and police are scheduled to contact Juvenile Court authorities about the incident.
A police spokesman said the parents of the boys involved will be billed by the city for the damage caused to the equipment in the shell. The officer noted that a state law provides that parents are responsible for vandalism damage caused by their children up to $500.
Locally, parents of children causing property damage are advised by police to make restitution for the loss. If the payment is not made, a civil suit to recover the damages can be filed against the parents.
