'Upward Bound' Set For EMU
YPSILANTI - Sixty boys and girls from high schools in Washtenaw and Macomb Counties will spend eight weeks on the Eastern Michigan University campus here, beginning June 25, as participants in the Upward Bound program sponsored by the federal Office of Economic Opportunity.
The tenth graders, selected from lists submitted by their school counselors, will be students who have a potential for high education but who, for various reasons, have not demonstrated it.
The group will receive instruction in the areas of communication, science and mathematics. There will also be a program of cultural and recreational activities to round out their experience.
Besides room and board, each boy and girl will receive a stipend of $10 a week.
During the regular academic year beginning in September, those who have spent the summer here will be expected to attend a series of Saturday morning meetings for continued tutoring and counseling. They will be paid $5 for each meeting attended.
Director of the Upward Bound program is John G. Pappas, assistant professor of education at Eastern.
