Assistant Professor-Emeritus Edward S. Everett of the University’s English department, a member of the U-M faculty for 39 years, died yesterday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. He was 84.
Dr. Everett was known locally for his work in connection with the Ann Arbor Exchange Club, the Boy Scouts and at the First Presbyterian Church where he had served on the Board of Deacons.
He had been an artist and cartoonist for the Providence Journal and the Ram’s Horn for the Home Herald for several years before coming to Ann Arbor in 1911.
Born on March 17, 1883, in Providence , R.I., a son of the late Rev. Thomas Jefferson and Sue Florence Morrison Everett, he was graduated from New Bedford, Mass., High School, and attended Trinity College from 1900 to 1901 before entering the field of journalism art.
Enrolling at the U-M in 1911, he received his bachelor’s degree in 1914, a master’s degree in 1915 and doctorate in 1921. He joined the faculty in 1914 as an instructor and was promoted to assistant professor in 1922. On his retirement in 1953, the U-M Board of Regents conferred upon him the emeritus title, citing him for his “conscientious and thorough service as a teacher of composition and literature.”
Prof. Warner G. Rice, chairman of the U-M English department, said “Edward S. Everett who joined the staff of the University as a member of the department of rhetoric in 1914 devoted more than 35 years to the teaching of Michigan students.
“Himself a master of an elegant prose style, he was one of a group associated with Prof F. N. Scott who maintained high standards in composition and rhetorical analysis. Friendly and considerate, he held the respect and affection of his colleagues during his long life, and will be remembered as a man who served the University loyally and well.”
He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity. He also was a member of the Science Research Club. He had been associated with Boy Scout Troop No. 1, and had headed fund-raising activities for the Bruin Lake Boy Scout Camp at one time. He was the author of articles in various publications.
Dr. Everett and Amanda Ellwood Cowen were married on Aug. 26, 1915, in Chicago. She died in June, 1954.
Survivors include two nephews, two nieces, and two cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Fontana-Hamilton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Hoover Rupert, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Private graveside services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
