Rowry Quits Democratic Job, Blasts Chairman

Ezra Rowry of 818 Pomona, a local civil rights leader, has resigned from the Washtenaw County Democratic Committee with a blast at its chairman, Charles Gray of Ypsilanti Township.

In his letter of resignation to Gray, Rowry said: “As I see it, you (Gray) have constantly opposed a meaningful County Democratic Party for as many years as I have known you. My views and your views on racial issues are far enough apart for me to say that you are just not my idea of a Democrat.

“Informed and non-brain-washed black people together with humanized whites recognize that you simply do not have compassion for oppressed peoples and therefore your leadership can only bring widespread disaffection from the Democratic Party,” Rowry said.

Rowry also said that at the Democratic convention last month Gray “refused to co-chair the Resolutions Committee meeting with me for reasons which I still do not understand or care to, and instead you and some of your cronies from Ypsilanti tried to intimidate me and disrupt the meeting. You will recall that after an excessive amount of disruptive activity I resigned, stating that I thought to do so was in the best interest of the people present.”

Rowry is chairman of the Ann Arbor chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality.
