Principal Says He’s Resigning At St. Thomas

Leo Wagner, principal of St. Thomas High School, has announced his resignation from that post at the end of this school year. He said he will return to the physical education department of the St. Thomas elementary school.

Wagner, who has been principal at St. Thomas since August, 1969, said, “I have submitted my resignation and now I am anxious to return to physical education.”

Wagner taught physical education at St. Thomas and coached football, basketball and baseball from 1949 to 1966. Between 1966 and 1968, Wagner was director of teacher personnel for the Archdiocese of Detroit. He returned to St. Thomas in the fall of 1968 as assistant principal, and was acting principal during part of the school year while former principal Sister Marie Lawrence was hospitalized.

Wagner, who resides with his wife at 432 Brookside Dr., received his BA degree from Eastern Michigan University and an MA in 1953 from the U-M. He coached track after it was added to the sports curriculum and in 1957 became athletic director at St. Thomas.

A successor has not yet been selected.
