Nurses Need Defense Fund

Editor, The News:

We highly commend the perceptive article by Mr. John Barton about Miss Filipina B. Narciso and Mrs. Leonora M. Perez, the two Philippine nurses accused of murdering and poisoning patients while working at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor. We are glad that through this article the public has been provided an opportunity to know the other side of the story. Knowing the background of these women and the high regard that patients and coworkers have for them, the charges against them are simply incredible.

We all want justice to be done, yet few realize that because of the complexity of the case and the length of, the trial, Miss Narciso and Mrs. Perez will need hundreds of thousands of dollars to prove their innocence.

The prosecutor has behind him the full panoply of governmental power with its unlimited financial, legal, and investigative resource. In contract, the defendants are two Filipino immigrants seeking a better life in the United States...

Those who believe in the highest traditions of justice and due process which demand not only that the guilty be punished but that the innocent be vindicated will wish to ensure that Filipina B. Narciso and Leonora M. Perez will have the opportunity to stand before the bar of justice in the fullness of their legal and civil rights.

If any of your readers wish to contribute to their defense fund, they can send their checks to the NARCISO/PEREZ LEGAL DEFENSE COMMITTEE, 921 Church St., No. 4, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.
