Age 98, died September 11, 1979 following a brief illness. She was the last survivor of nine brothers and sisters in a pioneer Ann Arbor family. Her father, George D. Schaffer, was born in Ann Arbor in 1840 and her mother, Elizabeth Merkle Schaffer was born in Chelsea in 1842. She attended Eastern Michigan University and graduated from Wayne State University, she then was a teacher in Detroit and Washtenaw County Public Schools. She was a member of the Womens City Club of Detroit and the Washtenaw County Historial Society. She is survived by her niece, Elizabeth McCollom Laidlaw of Birmingham, Mich.; grandnephews, Duncan M. Laidlaw of Youngstown, Ohio, W. Stuart Laidlaw of Ann Arbor, R. Bruce Laidlaw of Ann Arbor; grandniece, E. Christine Welch of Birmingham; great grandnieces, and nephews, Heather, Kari, Mark, and Kimberly Laidlaw, Guy and Claire Welch. Contributions may be made, in her name, to the Washtenaw County Historical Society. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
