Sally Patten holds a flag featuring Ann Arbor's
newly-stylized city seal, which will accompany as-
tronaut Jack Lousma on the next flight of the space
shuttle Columbia. Lousma grew up in Ann Arbor
and recently volunteered to take a city flag along
on the March flight, which he is commanding. A
speical flag was then prepared, bearing the sea
designed by Patten, a former parks department
employee who now is a free-lance interior design-
er. The seal, depicting a burr oak tree, actually
dates to 1870 but was abondoned around 1925 and a
different seal adopted. It is that seal -- featuring a
grape arbor above a wreath with the insignia re-
presenting religion, education and industry -- that
still appears on the sides of many city vehicles.
The original seal was reinstated as part of Ann Ar-
bor's 1974 sesquicentennial celebration, and more
flags similar in design to the one pictured but larg-
er in size may soon be produced.
