Ex-geology Professor Kellum dies
Lewis B. Kellum, professor emeritus of geology at the University of Michigan, died Wednesday at his home in Tipton at the age of 87.
From when he was appointed professor of geology until his retirement in 1967, Kellum devoted his time and attention to his duties as director of the U-M Museum of Paleontology. He also was curator of mesozoic and cenozoic invertebrates in that museum.
A native of Baltimore, Kellum studied at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his Ph.D. degree in 1924. He was employed as a geologist for a petroleum company in Mexico and the U.S. Geological Survey before coming to the U-M as an instructor in geology in 1928.
Kellum was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ann Arbor.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gail Wellwood Kellum, three sons, one daughter, two stepsons, five grandchildren and one sister.
There will be no visitation, but a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the First Baptist Church of Ann Arbor, with the Rev. Robert Wallace officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers.
