3 Washtenaw farms join 'centennial' list

Three Washtenaw County farms recently were recognized as “centennial farms” by the Michigan Historical Commission, bringing the county’s centennial tally to 148 farms.

The three are:

■ A 222-acre farm owned by Stanley and Helen Park at South Parker and Jerusalem roads west of Ann Arbor. The farm, which has been in the family since 1827, produces com, wheat, hay and oats.

■ A 99-acre farm owned by Oscar Henes on Bethel Church Road in southwest Lodi Township. It was been in the family since 1900 and produces com, soybeans, wheat, oats, hay and sheep.

■ An 80-acre farm owned by Lela Alber on Case Road in southwest Saline Township. It has been in the family since 1895 and produces com, soybeans, alfalfa and wheat.

Since the program started in 1948, more than 5,500 fams have been recognized. A centennial farm is classified as a working farm of 10 or more acres that has been continuously owned by the same family for at least 100 years. Call (517) 373-1667 for information on the program.
