At a diocesan conference held recenuy a bishop who was about to leave f or another see uttered, if one may believe the Guardian, the following farewell words: "If in any way Gkd uses me and permita me to do a littlegood work there in the last years of my lif e to bring people together, and to try to make peace and to show people when they are one raiher than when they are not one - if anybody upsets a bottle of petroleum and sets it on fire, and if I try to throw a pail of water on it, it wül be throngh the wisdom, and the erperience, and the kindncjs and the many usefnl lesson I have learned from all of you." Let his lordship be warned; sand is a saf er extinguisher than water in the case of petroleum, as water is apt to float the burning fluid and to spread the danger. -Notes and Queries.
