The World has shown that the democrats can elect their candidate for president by carrying the southern stateb, with New York, Indiana and New Jersey- the three votes lacking in this combination being already secuied, with one or two to spare, by the district systern of election in Michigan. How can the republicans beat this combination? They must hold all the ther states and carry either New York or Indiana -New Jersey being saf elf democratie. Can they do thisV Is it not within the bounds of reasonable probability to say in view of the voting last year and this, that the Democrats are at least as likely to carry Iowa and Montana as the republicans are to carry Indiana? These two states have sixteen electoral votes, or one more than Indiana. The democrats have just carried Iowa for the second time in succession, re-eleeting their entire ticket on the largest vote ever cast in the state. They have carried Montana in six of the seven elections since 1880. These states are, from the present outlook, more doubtf ui for the republicana next year than Indiana is for the democrats. There are other points of weakness in the republican column. Connecticut has given democratie pluralities in the last five eleqions. Henry Cabot Lodge told the republicans of Massachusetts plainly after the second election of Russell, this year, that they must " fight for the state " next year. New Hampshire gave 1,500 Democratie majority for democratie representatives last year, andonly 93 plurality for the republican governor. The state lias a secret-ballot law which wil] help the democrats, and the republican party is rent by a factional feud. Rhode Island gave a democratie majority of 1,600 for representatives last year, and has giveu a democratie plurality for governor for three years in succession. Wisconsiu is by no means safely republican. It elected a democratie governor last year by 28,000 plurality, and gave a democratie plurality of 33,000 on congiessmen. Illiuois elected a democratie treasurer by 9,847 plurality last year, and gave a democratie plurality of 31,000 and a majority over all oí' 10,000 on congressmen. If the democrats hold New York, how are the republicans to win?
