M. M. Nowlin, proprietor of the ttook House, had a $150 gold watch stolen Monday afternoon which wai recovered last evening by a very good piece of detective work. The watch had been left in a vest in the laundry of the hotel and when Mr. Nbwlin went after it, it was gone. Deputy Sheriff Paul Schall undertook to discover the thief. llichard Carroll, who worked about the yard of the hotel, was suspected. Froru a concealed place Schall saw hina looking up and down the street in asuspicious manner and put sornething in his pocket. He followed hirn on Washington street, passed through a saloon after him, and treading lightly so that his presence was not discovered, found Carroll burying the watch in the sand. After )urying it as he supposed securely, Carroll placed ui old basket over the spot and some empty beer cases above that and turned to go. Schall then grabbed his man and took him to jaĆ­l. Returning he got Mr. Xowlin and they dug the watch up f rom the sand.
