Manchester township owns four road machines, yet some of the joads are said to be rough enough to "make a preacher swear." J. H. Bortle, of Saline, has abandoned the digging of a water well, on account of a petroleum vein being tapped. Time was when a show of oil would have been worth a $5,000 bank check, and a sniff or a gas bubble would have sold for $50. Will Glover, of Saline, had an arm broken and got married both within a week. The Lord only knows what will strike the poor fellow next! Mrs. Dexter, of Dexter, will give a $1,000 town clock to the village if the village will furnish a tower for it. Dexter is now trying to borrow a light house. (hving to the sudden giving way of the posts of an old board fence at Saline on the 4th, six rods of men were precipitated backward into a muddy cornfield. They were dug out for the worth of their clothes. n # # John Lawless, of Ypsilanti town, in trying to steal a ride on a passing freight, last Saturday, was jerked to the earth, and had a collar bone broken. He will probably nevertry to board a train in such a lawless manner, again. The Dexter marshal sights along the barrel of his revolver at unmuzzled dogs. A Jerusalem cow - Jerusalem, Washtenaw county - died of nose bleed, last week. No cause for it is knöwn. John Taylor, an Ypsilanti colored lad, on the 4th, blew into a toy cannon, to discover why it did not go off. As it "went" a moment later and plowed a four-inch furrow in his skull, further research was deemed needless. A strange dude, who changes his clothes three times a day, was arrested at Ann Arbor last week, for trying to persuade little girls to go walking with him. He fought the officers who ushered him to the ja.il. One suit a day was sufficient for him after that. We find by the Argus that on the Fourth, at Ann Arbor, Mayor William G. Doty was one of the speakers. We also find on the same authority that the exercises on the same day, at Whitmore Lake, opened with a speech by Mayor Doty. What we would like to knowis, how many are there of that mayor anyway? It is generally understood, however, that Doty is a hustler.
