He was oue of the army who are living and seeing life in New York on an attenuated income, and one cold morning he awoke to the realization that the overcoat would Ba. a necessary part of his garb for that dy. He looked at it. 'Twas impresentable. He thrust his hands deep into his poekets. ïhey were einpty. Two direful f acts, neither of them surprises, faced hirn, but he was not annoyed. He proceeded cheerily to a small tailor"s shop and presented the overcoat for repairs. "It will eost you a dollar," said Shears. "The price is no obstacle, pro ceed, replied the customer. Shears turned the coat over to a subordínate and sat down f or a chat with the heavensent customer, for Shears was a Spaniard. And yet he was sufflciently Americanized to produce a deck of cards and propose a little game of poker. The heaven-sent assented. Vest buttons made admirable chips, and the cards flew for some minutes, ñnt.il the cnat was repaired.
