The special erop most largely grown at the east end of Long Island is the early potato. In connection with a good soil, preferably a clover , oil, the use of chemical fertilizers is said to give reBults quicker, Bnrer and with less expense than other manures. A Long Island farmer says in American Gardeiiing: I work a small place of about twentyfive acres, and the use of fertilizers, instead of so much stable manure, enables me to dispense with the services of an extra mn, and to grow more potatoes on the same land two years in succession. We do not care so much f or lasting effects; we simply wish to get our money retumed as soon as possible with a good percentage of profit. I grow about ten acres of potatoes each year, one-third Ohios aud two-thirds Early Rose or a similar variety, followed the same season by late cauliflowers and other green crops for winter storage. The yield from 9}4 acres the past season was 3,000 bushels. One ton per acre is the amotint ugéd for the potato erop, with soinetbing add'ed for the green erop following.
