Some very ingenious inethods are employed f or transinitting dutiable articles by post. Not very long ago a package from Germany was found to contain a Bmall roll of butter. A wire passed through it met with an obstruction, which proved to be a tin box filled with valuable jewelrj'. Probably a dozen silk handkerchiefs are found wrapped up in newspapers in every mail from China. The skill exhibĂ ted by the postal clerks in detecting 6ueh contraband inclosures is wonderful. It seems to partake of the nature of intuitiou. They say that they do not know themselves how they do it, but that a newspaper with a silk handkerchief in it has a sort of gritty feeling when manipulated. Silk stockings are mailed from France in the same manner.
