Cut worms are ruining gardens in Emmet county. Michigan Orangemen will hold a convention at Saginaw July 13. A new triple telegraphic cable has been laid between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. At Menominee, July i, will be held a tournaraent of wheelmen of the upper península. Capitalists have bought a tract of, land near Alpena and will plant 500,000 plum trees. Eoscommon county's huckleberry erop, owing to the intense heat, will be a total íailure. The bod of Mrs. Mary Draim, a dissipated woman, was found in the river at Jackson. Penniless, out of work and despondent, Robert Moon, aged 51, comraitted suicide at Mason. As a result of the new female suffrage law, the women of Detroit will be organized by wards. The Spanish caravels, on the way to the exposition, will stop over at Detroit for three days about July 1. Helmuth Schwartz hanged himself in Detroit Saturday. Despondency over the death of his wife is given as the cause. Henry R. Harris, of Kalamazoo, has been appointed master of transportation of the Grand Rapids & Indiana railroad. The team of T. Gleason, a farmer:of Riverton, ran a way, throwing Mr. Gleason out of the wagon, killing him instan tly. Lightning struck and burned the barn and contents belonging to Farmer Newington, near Romulus. Three horses were killed. The successor of the late Gen. F. Hastings as brigadier general of the Knights of Pythias is Col. VV. J. Gage, of Saginaw. Anthony J. Seliuitc, paying teller of the Merehants' & Manufacturera' bank of Detroit, has been appointed a national bank examiner. During the races at Clio last week in the 2:40 trot Thurlow T., a fine 8year-old owned by William Watts, of Ann Arbor, dropped dead. Wheeler & Co. made a 10 per cent. reduction in wages in all departments of their ship yard at West Bay City, and will lay off 300 or 400 men. Charles Thompson, aged 21, and residing at St. Clair, was crushed to death at Cleveland, O., between the stern of the Kalkaska and the lumber piies on the deck. Buchanan has lost two ministers - Rev. Mr. Allen, of the Christian church, and Rev. Mr. Adair, of the Advent church, having resigned and will go to other fields. Within a few hours after Farmer Kby, of Cass county, had taken out tornado insurance on his farm to the amount of $1,000 a gale blew the building to pieces. For impersonating' a United States officer Elmer McArthur, alias O. E. Small, was convicted at Detroit and sentenced to a term of imprisonment of two years and eleven months, and, for fraudulent use of the mails, seventeen months. Bart Doran, who killed his 18-monthsold child and then committed suicide at Windsor Beach, near Rochester, N. Y., last week, was for a time instructor of boxing at the Orchard Lake (Mich.) military academy, and had taught the manly art in Detroit and Ann Arbor for several years.
